A name born from the joining of the houses d'Halluin and Candale 

In 1611, Henry, Earl of Foix-Candale, becomes Duke d'Halluin-Candale through his marriage to Anne Duchess d'Halluin. 

In 1621, Anne Duchess d'Halluin, becomes Duchess of Candale.

Henry's grandmother, Diane de Foix-Candale, entertained a correspondence with philosopher Michel de Montaigne on the subject of children's education.
